The benefit of Corten Steel products in the garden is not always obvious. Designers like it as Corten Steel is modern steel of interesting colour and texture. From the Angel of the North to simple fire bowls for the garden, Corten has proven to be very versatile.
In 1933, US Steel developed the Corten material. They aimed to eliminate the need for painting and to protect the steel from rust damage. Ironically, the answer to rust is rust!
Our Corten fire bowl is the perfect example of this. The sturdy fire bowl is made of extra-thick steel so you can leave it outdoors all year round. It will withstand damaging corrosion caused by rain or fire.
A drainage hole in the centre prevents standing water, and the steel bowl withstands high temperatures. A perfect and beautiful container for an outdoor log fire.
Corten is a combination of a particular group of steels and alloys. Specially made to form a stable rust-like appearance after a long period of exposure to weather. This is the so-called weathering steel effect.
The unique combination of alloys results in controlled corrosion, forming a patina that provides a protective layer against corrosion and weather. This chemical composition of this layer provides effective corrosion resistance. The layer protecting the steel might look like rust, but it is protecting the steel from corrosive rust!
In our range, we have Pellet patio heaters produced from extra-thick Corten steel sheets. As a result, they require little maintenance upkeep. The protective layer of rust that prevents further corrosion means that it will last for decades.
Our pellet patio heaters are not only elegant in design but use eco-friendly fuel, namely wood pellets. Moulded into a circular or square pillar, the Corten steel sheets hide the fuel mechanism. The fire at the top of the pillar heats any patio beautifully and provides a mesmerizing show of flames. Check out the Corten cube pellet patio heater (square) and a Corten core pellet patio heater (round) on our website.
An added benefit is the heat-resistant and heat radiation capability of the metal. Because of its makeup, the Corten material withstands heat without increasing corrosion. This makes it perfect for fire bowls, pellet patio heaters, and our favourite, a BBQ grill such as the Vulcanus.
Our Vulcanus range has simple rectangular stands made of Corten steel and has a steel fire pit with ceramic lining. The Corten steel outer layer frames the grill to protect the Vulcanus from the damaging effect of the elements. This is a unique, patented barbeque. In addition, its fire pit produces a beautiful wood fire and a sustainable stable heat that is perfect for outdoor cooking.
In summary, there are many reasons to like Corten Steel. But in the end, it is a subjective choice. We love the beautiful rusty brown colouring of the steel. The various shades of natural brown and orange make it perfect for use outdoors.
The natural hues make it blend in perfectly with natural materials whilst still maintaining a very contemporary feel. Architectural shapes in the garden always make beautiful focal points and often are a great conversation piece.
Whether you have a classic or modern garden, our Corten Steel Products are worth a look!
