The benefit of Corten Steel products in the garden is not always obvious. Designers like it as Corten Steel is modern steel of interesting colour and texture. From the Angel of the North to simple fire bowls for the garden, Corten has proven to be very versatile.
In 1933, US Steel developed the Corten material. They aimed to eliminate the need for painting and to protect the steel from rust damage. Ironically, the answer to rust is rust!
Our Corten fire bowl is the perfect example of this. The sturdy fire bowl is made of extra-thick steel so you can leave it outdoors all year round. It will withstand damaging corrosion caused by rain or fire.
A drainage hole in the centre prevents standing water, and the steel bowl withstands high temperatures. A perfect and beautiful container for an outdoor log fire.
Corten is a combination of a particular group of steels and alloys. Specially made to form a stable rust-like appearance after a long period of exposure to weather. This is the so-called weathering steel effect.
The unique combination of alloys results in controlled corrosion, forming a patina that provides a protective layer against corrosion and weather. This chemical composition of this layer provides effective corrosion resistance. The layer protecting the steel might look like rust, but it is protecting the steel from corrosive rust!
